Other Procedures > Contact Lenses

Contact Lenses, (or "phakic Implants") are a relatively new surgical option with promising results. The technique is somewhat similar to a "clear Lensectomy" but appears to offer an alternative for both improved results as well as superior safety.

A phakic implant is called a "contact lens implant" because a synthetic lens is surgically implanted within the eye over the natural lens. Unlike a clear lensectomy, however, the Page 7 natural lens of the eye is not removed. The contact lens implant is added to and enables the natural lens of the eye to see more clearly.

Although initial results are promising, the technique has not yet been practiced enough to have sufficient data about its long range safety. Some of the risks of this procedure include infection, the decomposition of the cornea, uveitis, glaucoma and the formation of cataracts. In coming years and with more experiential data, contact lens implants may become the preferred choice of patients and surgeons over clear lensectomy.

Contact lens implants may be used in combination with the LASIK procedure as a means of improving the results of either surgery alone. While LASIK does not affect the lens of the eye and its function of the "fine tuning" focus, LASIK can help reduce or eliminate other refractive errors such as myopia, astigmatism or hyperopia which may be added contributing factors in diminished visual acuity. LASIK can be performed as a complement either before or after having contact lens implant surgery.

As a consummate expert, Dr. Rahmani can discuss contact lens implant surgery and/or the LASIK procedure with you in a personal consultation.
